Thermal temp gun

Where is the correct spot to check engine temp?At the top of the block next to the head gasket or around the spark plugs on the head itself.Im gettin 168 around the plugs and 147-150 at th top of the block next to the heads.Thanks for any info

I check just forward of the head, on the water jacket. It will naturally show a higher temp. aiming at the plug.
