So yesterday I hit the lake with a coworker to try our hand at catching some crappie. We staged the boat and he offered to back me in and I'd pick him up at the dock. I tossed him my truck keys and jumped into the boat. He backed me in, boat started, I backed off the trailer, he started to pull up, and the bucket of minnows we had forgotten to transfer into the boat tipped over on the floor of my truck. I wondered why it took so long for him to come back down to the dock. He said he was pretty sure he had gotten them all. We loaded a few hours later and it didn't smell. I gave a quick check again after getting home and didn't see anything. Today I almost fell over when I opened the truck door. One little guy had spent the night in there. He had gotten in a cut in the carpet meant for wiring to come through. I ran a carpet cleaner on the floor of the truck and the floor mats today, let it air out for a while, and then tried the cotton balls in vanilla extract trick. The truck still smells horrible. I guess I'll just have to keep airing it out as much as possible and keep doing more of the same. I might start walking. I can't be the first one to have done this, anybody else have any tips on getting the fish stink out of my truck?

Don't just set that box of baking soda in the truck, dump it out all over that area of carpet. Leave it to absorb the smell a couple days then vacuum it up. If it still smells repeat the process.

I'm going with a box dumped into the carpet and an open box wedged between the seat and center console. Thanks.

It could be worse

It could be worse

My grandfather had a bait shop down in Grovelend back in the 50's-60s. My dad would dig worms, pack them up and deliver them. One day, as he was headed out on a delivery, he saw some buddies hanging out at the bridge and decided to stop for a few. A few minutes turned into a few hours, and the hot central Florida sun convinced every last one of those night crawlers that there was a better place to be. They crawled through every inch of that 50's chevy. In the seat foam, behind the dash, under the carpet. Dad said it took through the next summer till the car smelled right again.

Got that beat, hit a skunk on the way to work this mourning.

Don't worry about the minnow smell, you won't even notice it in a few days. :)

Sounds like some "Crap" pee minnows. Couldn't resist.

You have all that minnow swill in your carpet, that's what stinks as well - unless you have Weathertechs.

Had a friend leave a skien of salmon roe he was using to tie roe sacks up with in his fishing vest and hung it up in his closet for a couple of months... he wasn't pleased when he discovered where that foul stench he had been looking for, for weeks was coming from.

That's like the stench in the basement. Found the source when I want after a bag of ice. Discovered that the little space heater I had plugged into the same outlet must have been a bit too much load when the freezer ran as I found the freezer totally defrosted, warm, everything NASTY BAD, the breaker had tripped. Must have been shorty after I plugged it in well over a week ago.

Freezer is nice and clean now!

Hey, no offense taken Ray. I cleaned up the baking soda this weekend. Between that and airing it out as much as possible between storms moving through the area, I'd say the smell is amost gone. It at least something I can live with now.

I have learned that 20 mule team borax works miracles in carpet situations as does a product that used to be called Nature's Miracle. I think you can get generic versions of it now. It is an enzyme cleaner. The enzymes digest organic matter. It takes some time but it works really well.

Oh, it works on vomit too by the way though I hope you never have to find that out for your self.

When I was a kid I worked in supermarket while going to high school. I parked it in the back of the market. Some guys from the fish department felt the need to pop my hood and shove fish heads in the spaces of the exhaust manifold

Took me a few days to finally figure out where that fish stench was coming from! Car reaked for months . . .

Been there done that. Took about a dozen bottles of Febreze and a year and a half for the smell to come out fully.

Toddler stage for my daughter is right around the corner. If she vomits as much as I did during a kid, I'm going to look into a cosco membership to buy that stuff in bulk.

Bait box of crawlers in the back seat opened and many crawled out last year.

Dead crawlers runs a close second to rotten minnows.
