Can anyone give me an idea of what it would cost to have a single axle 900lbs trailer painted?

Painted by whom? If you expect a body shop to do it, you would spend less money buying a new trailer. The prep work alone would eat up the cost. Most shops won't paint something an individual has primed because they can't see what prep work was done and don't want you coming back blaming them for flaking paint and rust formation. HVLP guns are reasonably priced and you can rent a compressor so do the prep work and paint it yourself. Any automotive paint shop and many auto stores like NAPA can provide the paint, reducers, and other materials you need. It's a trailer so if you end up with a run or two no big deal. You will be better at it next time.

I am painting mine right now. its not the worst thing ever. I am using an electric drill with a paint/rust remover wheel. washing, priming with rustoleum and and using the same brand paint. i agree that buying a new one would be cheaper unless you get a great deal and pray the work isnt crap.

How bad is the previous paint?

I repainted my trailer with the boat off a couple summers ago. Scraped off all loose rust, primed with Rustoleum rusty metal primer and then top-coated with Benjamin Moore rust preventative paint mixed to my desired color. Painted it with a brush.

Yep, a good scrape and sand job then brush paint it with the old rustoleum and it will look a million bucks !! That is what I did. I did spray paint the fenders though with a couple of coats from a spray bomb the same colour as the boat. A lot of people asked if i got a new trailer.
Bottom line is you will make a world of difference both cosmetically and preservation wise using this method.

i found my old blue jeans the holy ones . then found my old glasses I used to wear . got me a 1/2 gallon of white rustoleum . some scraping tools, and a wire brush .and just layed on the ground and painted everything . it looked like new .even a man riding by on a horse would agree.

Repainted mine 5 years ago and it was very rusty at the time. used an angle grinder with a twisted wire wheel to get the rust off. Used rutoleum rusty metal primer and paint from a rattle can (can of spray paint) and it still looks good now. Shows a little rust from time to time but I just scrape it and touch it up.

Re: The painted trailer....

^ Ken is right - since repainting I have replaced my bearings, grease seals, races, bunk brackets, tires, tail lights and tounge. Did everything myself over the last few years - except for the tounge - I don't have a welder. Even with all that It was cheaper than buying a new trailer. I still need to replace my keel rollers. All these things are important to check closely. If you can't do these things yourself then you may want to buy new.

Nothing worse than sitting at the side of the road with a good looking mechanical failure !!!

Re: The painted trailer....

Been there - done that - I spent 4 days with my boat at home completely rewiring the lights each day after work. Even added some neat accent lights for the heck of it. On the tow back to the storage unit, one of the dry rotted tires blew, tore up the rim and flung debris up onto my boat leaving some beauty marks. At the time, I didn't have a spare, either.

Definitly paint the trailer yourself. Be sure you drop some money into tires, bearings, lights and whatever else before you paint it. Be sure to check the spare too! It will come out good with a little elbow grease in the prep, and you'll be happy you did!
