I have a 1998 crownline 202br alpha 1 gen? Not sure of gear ratio. Anywho, went to leave the beach and I forgot one GD dock line the kids were playing with that was tied off to a cleet, reversed fine went forward Died, restart, forward died, x3. Seen the problem removed rope, now the shifter is really hard to put in forward and no start, if I rock the shifter between F and R the motor will bump that’s it. TIA!!!!

Disconnect the shift interrupter switch on the shift plate and see if it will start

If it does, try to readjust it.

My first comment is because you said "no start"

Thinking we need to get it started first. Since it does start and now hard to shift the drive might be damaged.

Pull the drive to see if the cables move smooth with drive off. Then shift the drive and see if it does ok moving the shift foot. Drain the lube and look for metal

Also first disconnect the shift cable from the control box at the engine and check that the bind is not in the control box.

Yes sir I will try to isolate the issue from the motor bracket. The prop spins free in N and locks into place when in F or R.

So I disconnected the shift cables at the motor, the cable from the remote was stiff and I had no movement from the the remote to the cable end at the motor…..as I gained movement on the cable end at the motor I heard a click near the remote… I then operated the remote handle and it now moves the shift cable at the motor. I reattached the cables, still no start, I removed the wires off the neutral kill switch, no start, I removed the neutral kill switch and ohm’d it out and it has continuity when switch is depressed.

What would be a good procedure to test the starter?
Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Jumper from the big battery cable on the starter's solenoid, to the tiny terminal closest to the block with the yellow red wire on it,.....
The starter should then engage,....
