The noob 4.3 thread (EFI)

I am having my first good look for the first time @ this new 4.3 engine boat combo i have (It reminds why i don't sell chevy's) anyway's iv'e noticed that the air intakes do not open @ idle or @ high speed took a shot of them @ 2000 rpm just slighly open.

WHy in someone's name would they create a nice atomized fuel stream and just slam it into a butterly or is something wrong here (hmm see if this a ford mpi was used as far back 1988) Anyway enough of that, is this how this system operate's and if some tell's me to back the choke or have prostrate surgey ................8)

Yeah thats normal, Chevy TBI. The IAC Intake Air Control motor controls your idle, so the butterflies are completely closed. does this throttlebody have a cable connection or fly-by-wire? Im gessing if its fly-by-wire the butterflies close after the boat is up to speed and engine load drops enough, being then controlled by IAC. Just guessing there tho.

In the Water,+ Under a Load,.....
Those Throttle Plates will be Open, Much More........

That's HOW Gasoline Engines Work.............

Yup, that is how TBI works, if you want multi-port injection then you gotta pay more.

So there are load sensor's also............amazing, yes it is a flybywire which is quite cool, very reliable system in a car, hope that hold's true to boat's.

Does it sense the load thourgh the exhaust reading's?

No, you don't have "Fly By WIre" you have a cable that opens the trottle plates. FBW would have a couple of wires going to a throttle plate motor. No cable anywere.
They do have FBW systems on boats, but not the the TBI system.
While that cable hooked to your trottle isn't a wire, everything past that is done by input and output from the ECM (The engines computer) things like spark and advance, fuel injector operation, idle air control valves, throttle position sensors and the list goes on.
Get yourself a set of service manuals for your particular engine and study them.
Post your serial number and I can at least tell you which Volvo manuals you need.

You say "new" 4.3...but as everyone points out this is a TBI system. I thought those were only made for a few years in the late 90's to early 00s' maybe on boats (mid 80's to early 90's if we're talking about the similar system on Chevy trucks as you also refererenced).

Most (if not all) new fuel injected boats are now MPI, which is a far superior system in terms of efficiency of combustion for the exact reasons you allude to. TBI is just a glorified electronic carburator that relies on a manifold to distribute the fuel between cylinders, in a very uncontrolled and unbalanced manner when compared to the precision of MPI.

So I'm assuming your "new" boat is used? Or are Volvo and Mercruiser still selling TBI engines new? If they are, I feel it's kinda sad since the technology is many decades old...then again I guess they're still selling some engines with carbs and running open vent fuel systems, both helping to feed our world's ozone and pollution problems...so I guess this shouldn't surprise me...

At a minimum, this industry needs to go to MPI and sealed fuel systems across 100% of their product lines very very soon, like maybe 1999 would be a good deadline. Oh wait...that was almost 8 years ago. My bad.

Sorry to get a bit political. It just bugs me when an industry seems to be just BEGGING for further government-forced EPA regulation when the technology they need to prevent it has been around for many, many years, tested and proven, and available for relatively little up front $ when compared to the benefits that would be gleaned.

Over and out. Most importantly...be sure to enjoy your new boat! That's what it's all about...

He has a 2001 boat, but the engine is 2000 or 99. Reason I say that is 2000 EF model Volvo's were the last year they used the TBI system, and in 2001 they went back to red engines instead of the dark gray they used from 94 to 2000 when they did the OMC joint venture/buy out. Both Mercruiser and Volvo EFI engines use strictly the MPI, no TBI, plus they still sell carbed engines, not sure why.

Yes Don is right it is a 2001 model, As to new it is, if you can believe this or not the company actually lost the boat in inventory for 4 years. Sat in a warehouse all by it's lonesome.......... the rest is history.

The 4.3 is actually a great motor very well respected in the auto ind and the mpi while maybe not a fuel efficent as a efi does the job quite well, It never fail's on startup i have great power and if the injector's fail i only replace @ most two.

Now replacing a thermostat............ that is another story...
