BBQ, haven't dealt with them. As with any internet or catalog shop, you're buying sight unseen.

If you are not capable of setting up a motor yourself-don't do it. There are some tricks to it and if it is not done right it can cause you big problems.

I also do not think your local dealer is going to be real happy about servicing those engines. Would you?

Looks to me that they are dumping non-currents.
My 2002 price list shows F115LRS, F115XRA & F115TXRA. All of those required an e-mail price request. That price is way below 2002 dealer cost.

What did I do wrong, guys? I asked for a quote on a F115TXRA and F115TXRZ and got a quote of slightly over $7400 and $6900. I can better that locally, with a dealer who will buy my 130TXRQ, rig my boat and honor the warranty.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Got a correction on the price of the F115TXRZ (2001, 25" shaft) to $6595. A good price, but $400 higher than quoted to BBQ.

I guess the $6200 price was for a LF115TLRZ (2001 left rotation, 20" shaft).

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Have you taken a look at www.boatmotors.com? They sell outboards at large discounts and have 1000+ customers who will tell you they got a great motor. For example: Click Here

Yes, shameless self-promotion but we have to make sure that people at least know about all options out there. ;)

Guys, I'm curious, help educate me on this one. Dealers, feel free to comment too.

I know the dealers will lose the profit from the initial motor sale, but don't they still get paid by the manufacturer of the motor for any warrenty work?

And I know they get paid by you and me for any normal service work.

Unless you go in and tell the dealer, how will he know the difference from you moving into a new area and needing your motor service, compared to buying it through the internet?

I've had boat motor dealers tell me that when they are overbooked, they schedule their work so that customers that bought their motors through them get "A" priority, customers that did not buy new there, but have the brands they carry get "B" priority, and everyone else is "C". they tell the customer this when they are working out the repairs. But they never refuse work, and they are professional if you decide not to use them when they are too busy for your needs.

Yes, Admin5, I check www.boatmotors.com regularly. Their prices are very good but they don't currently offer what I want.

My wants are very specific: 115 or bigger 4 stroke with 25" shaft. I don't really care if it is Honda, Yamaha, Suzi, Merc; new, leftover, used, or rebuilt, just so the price is attractive enough to balance the disadvantages of buying online then taking it to my local dealer for rigging and service.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Dealers have sales goals to meet. The engine manufacturers are in the business of manufacturing and distributing engines-not fixing them. Most manufacturers know that providing parts and service is necessary to remain in business. The dealers are the same way. If a dealer does not meet certain requirements agreed to in the franchise agreement, the manufacturer will take the sign down.

The dealer cannot refuse anyone service, it is just in their best interest to keep their sales customers happy first. If you were to talk to many owners of dealerships you would find that very few came up through the back end (backbone) of the business. The vast majority have sales backgrounds.

Some may see this as short sighted-yet that's the way it works.
