I am going up to Canada next weekend for my yearly trip with my father and some friends. I love this trip because of the great times and the great fishing. We are staying at Andersons Lodge In Sioux Lookout and Fishing the huge lake Lac Seul. As the four of us fish we always bring home our limit and always obey the great slot size limit. Over the past few years I have fell in Love with my ultralight rod for pan fish. Yes I have cought bass and Northerns on it also and man was it a blast. Just looking for a few opinions on bring my ultra light up there. Oh yeah it has four pound test on it. Im thinking it would be a ton of fun, but I am worried about the health of the fish after such a fight. With the slot limit it helps save some of the breeding fish and I have seen it do tremendous things. I know I will have break offs And I can live with that Just looking for a little advise and has anyone done this.

Re: The Eyes are calling

You can put a lot of pressure on a fish with 4# line if you have a good drag and a rod long/slow enough. The rod is more important than the drag.
You will trade some sensetivity with the slower/longer rod though.
Light line, short ultralight rod, big fish,= long fight.
Although, for walleye you should'nt have much problem with your present set-up.
If the water temp. is low enough the health of the fish should be fine on a long fight.
I fish 4# alot for steelhead, and have no problem with breakoff's if I do my part right. Good line and good knots and checking for nicks will prevent most breakoff's.
I would try to find a 8'-10' ultralight type rod, fly rod blanks are my fav. but a store bought one whould work fine if you can tolerate reel mount. When you hook a gator this set-up will help.
