Dusty, my fishing hound, likes to ride on the front fishing deck except during acceleration until we get up on plane, or in rough water. He learned awhile back to recognize an approaching boat wake in time to step down. And to brace for acceleration when I throtte up. Then he figured out that when I stow the trolling motor we're about to take off.

But today he surprised me. Usually I put the hammer down as we pass the no-wake buoy, but I was fiddling with the emergency lanyard or something - I swear he recognized the buoy and stepped off the deck soon as we passed it, before I even put my hand on the throttle.

If I could just teach him to drive the boat on to the trailer...

Re: The Dog Surprised Me Again

Some dogs are like people, smarter than others for sure. jt, looks like you have a wonderful companion.

I got my dog mainly to be a boat dog. He loves it, but he hates the water. I don't know what to do to get him to go in. He has watched other dogs jump in and fetch and stuff, but he won't even drink water out of a puddle or even the lake.

Now when it comes time to load up the weekend gear, he gets all his gear ready to go and puts it by the door. I'll open the truck door, he then gets his toys/bones and takes them to the truck. He then jumps in and waits until we leave. Once at the boat, he will take his things to the boat.

I wish he could jump up onto the bridge. He is just too heavy for me to lift up. And when I drive the boat from the bridge, he sits on the back deck and crys because he wants up on the bridge. Guess I need to figure out a ramp or something that can be easily set up and put away for him.

Nice story jt! :D
