Nice fish, better dog.

If I was in a mean mood I would say something about musky bait, but I am not in a mean mood.

Joe Pool?

Re: The bass du jour

Joe Pool: no one is cruel enough to use a dog for bait. Years ago I saw an article from Wisconsin that reported how a teenaged girl sitting on a raft splashing her feet in the water suffered a vicious bite that took a chunk out of her foot. I wrote my old fishing buddy, who at the time was concentrating on muskies (gosh, in five years he caught three, none legal.). I told him he was using the wrong bait. There are plenty of teenagers out there--you'd never have to sacrifice the family dog!

Just another Modest Proposal from Poor Richard from Michigan

Re: The bass du jour

thanks poor richard...come to think of it, I do know a few teenagers that are working on careers as muskie bait ;) JB was referring to the bass...and Joe Pool is the name of the lake, small (7500 acres), on the edge of town...it's convenient especially when gas is so expensive, but not known as an especially productive fishing hole.

JB, J Pool, jtexas; I'm so confoosed. Not too many big ponds like Joe are called Pool. Is that common around Arlington? My best friend and colleague is from around there--both of us were literature professors. He clipped my nose with a chain saw. We still refer to it as the Texas chainsaw massacre, of course. You should have heard the students howl. "Professors Cut Wood; Stupidity Ensues." 96 teensy stitches. Talk about getting pecked to death by a duck....

Nice bass, I thought I was the only one fool enough to use a rattle trap in cold water. You just never know this time of year.

Im going to work on the boat next weekend so I can start fishing. Water temp is hovering around 50 now so have get busy.

I'm so jealous of your 52 degrees water jt. You're not the only one throwing rattle trap in cold water BF. I'm along with thousand of angler will throw the trap all the way through pre-spawn. I also use them in October.

Last thurs I went out and the water was 40.3 and caught 2 fish on a Lucky craft LV rat l trap one being 3.8 lbs. Surprised the crap out of me to catch a fish with a Trap that cold.

JB & jTexas: Gosh, JB, I never dreamed anyone would use a 5# BASS for bait. That would be blasphemy. So naturally I thought you meant the dog. I can send you some pesky 12-year old kids, though.

I have a big old cat named Izaak who I've trained to swim down and grab big bluegills out of a school. He gets to eat one out of ten. My question: am I required to pay estimated Social Security and Medicare for him?

There was a discussion on my local fishing board about when to break out the red traps with a couple guys advocating now...I pulled mine out at the end of the day when all the jigs & worms & flukes failed.

Can't say I've ever fished for bass in 40° water. The 52° water was the coolest I found, being on the north side near the dam...it was 54.8° midday uplake - pre-spawn is just around the corner!

One interesting thing about this draught is all the usual spawning beds are exposed...not sure what the basses will make of that.

Well, when ya have a hot date and the motels are full, there is allways the back seat of the car????????????????

Dont worry about the basses, they will find a place. Only problem might be that there will be no place for the fry to hide out and the spawn may not be good this year.

Only good thing may be that because the lakes are low, grass and stuff will grow around the edge so that when the lake raises back up it will be good for the fish. Cycles, life is all about cycles.
