don't turn off your engine during refueling. This happened in our area at a marina we've been to! Be safe on the lake! And THINK before you DO.

Guaranteed the guy had a crappy engine that doesn't like to start. Sad thing is, rather than fixing he'd rather put his whole family in danger by refueling while the damn thing is running. And whoever works the refueling station should be fined and out of a job.

agreed. This is different from mistakes we all can make. And a well-maintained engine should be safe to fill when running even though it's NEVER worth the risk.

I'd say in most cases a running engine is SAFER. Its pumping air through the compartment, and the risk of spark from the solenoid/starter isn't there.

I had a friend burn a 2 year old Ski boat to the water line @ Jordan lake a few years back. Filled up and forgot to turn on blower hit the switch and BOOOOM! Very lucky everyone involved was OK but you just never know it only takes a split second to make a HUGE mistake.

What would cause the explosion to happen? The only thing I can think of is a short of the plug wires.. beyond that..?

There was not enough info to say why... As you fill a gas tank gas vapors are dispersed and since they are heavier than air tend to sink. If enough accumulated and there is any type of spark source... well, we read the results. Hope everyone stays safe this Memorial day weekend!!!

I am sure there is a sign at every gas station that says "Turn off Engine"
Glad it was an accident and not a disaster.
