Yep... It happened...

My son and his GF are up from Missouri for a visit...

Went tubing on Friday a.m... Fished all afternoon. Had a great time.

Saturday the forcast was a bit dicey. Stayed around town and did some touristy stuff. No boating this day. :(

Sunday, the Daughter and SIL and Grand daughter come on over for a BBQ and fun stuff. :)

We go tubing and have a great time... I had some Flat heads left from Friday and decided to go fishing in the afternoon. While being the generous host, (baiting and removing fish) I finally had a few moments to fish. Caught some real nice pannies a few rock bass and a few Northerns. My Son all of a sudden says WHAO MAMA!!! He had a nice Pike on!! I set my rod down. (Big mistake)

I grabbed the net, boated his fish and I showed him "How To" un hook a pike and put it in the LW. Just as I turned to grab my fishing rod... I heard a splash!!! Yep over it went. Big old tug on the line and well...

Water was DEEEP and no one would volunteer to "Fetch" it... We tried and tried to snag it with a big treble gaff.. No luck.... *sigh*...

On the way to our dock, I told my son. I will clean and cook this fish for you. AND... you WILL eat it once I smoke it... Its gonna taste just like a nice piece of Mahi Mahi... I promise... That rod and reel cost me ALOT... Penn Spinning reel and a Berkely 7ft Graphite with cherry wood insert... :(

Lessons learned. If you are being the host.. Be it... If you are going to fish too, Do so by pulling your line in to help others...

Just another day on the lake... All in all... It was fun and great familytime...

Happy Boating!!!

Well, you can't put a price on quality family time.

Sucks about the rod and reel, but maybe you will catch it back next weekend and then you can post it in the thread about what you have caught.:D;)

Invest in a nice pole holder so you can do both

Good hosting though :)

Re: Thats one expesive Fish!!!

I was bank fishing last year before we bought our first boat.....wife was on the ramp when suddenly she was catching bass two at a time so for about 35-40 minutes I stayed there taking off fish, watching her and occasionally throwing my small rod out there, then I wandered back to my spot about 20 feet away where I left my other rod......whoops not there.....I was lucky to find it almost in the lake a little further down and almost all of the line was gone, save for the (lousy) knot I tied, rod was bent and line was probably 100 yards plus down the lake.
Lucky for me I had left the bail open but I ignored it too long. I grabbed the rod, cranked a few feet back and found a big fish was on there. I yelled at the wife and took off down the side of the lake and finally got the fish in....a 32" flathead, which shocked me as normally the only catfish you catch there are small 15-19" channel cats or 10-16" mud cats (yellow bellies). I was lucky....so on our boat we have three rod holders, JUST IN CASE, and the last thing I want to do is swin for my rods...

I remember that happening to a friend of mine several years ago though while boating with his wife. Rod got pulled in by a catfish and being the stubborn Laotion he is he dove into pretty deep water and got it back.....no fish though.

Re: Thats one expesive Fish!!!

while we were getting the trailer backed down to the ramp at our local small lake i decided to throw out a line with a night crawler on it and put the rod in the pipe at the edge of the dock. so we load up my buddies boat pull up out of the water and put away the rest of the gear and ready the boat for our short trip home. (it was at night nobody there waiting) we were just pulling out of the parking lot when i rembered my rod at the dock. drove back down and sure enough there was a fish on. the pipe was angled back to shore a little and the rod was broke into 2 pieces. tried to reel in the fish but didn't work to well so we handlined it back in. it ended up (after 40 min.) being the largest fresh water fish i caught to that point. it was a 40" long carp. second biggest ever for the lake we were at.

Re: Thats one expesive Fish!!!

there are so many rod/reels lost at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that is it no longer remarkable when someone catches one. Recently a guy described a rig he caught on a local fishing forum and there were a dozen replies, all seemingly honest, describing recently lost gear (and one guy who lost his 10 years ago!)
Often people snag a rod in striper season with a striper still hooked.

Re: Thats one expesive Fish!!!

I've snagged two complete, 4/0 trolling combo in the past 5 years. Both were rigged, bait and all, ready to go. Neither had been in the water too long. Must have bounced out of a rod holder while they were running.
