I found this site looking for insight on getting my old 71 60 HP Johnson running again. I was given a 71 Glassmaster from my father-in-law about ten years ago. He had not had it in the water for many years, actually only used the boat very little. I trailered it from SC to Texas and put a battery in, rebuilt the carbs, put a new water pump in, and new points and that sucker fired up! I run it several summers and then I let it sit for a couple of summers and the carbs gummed up again. Well I decided to get it on the water again this spring.

I rebuilt the carbs again but I couldn't get it to run right. I tinkered with it, and searched the threads here and found a lot of info on this particular engine, 60ESL71C. First, I checked the compression to see if it was worth replacing some other parts and that was good. So after replacing the coil, amplifier, fuel pump, and removing the clipper she is humming along great. I used the info I found here to troubleshoot, along with the original manual from my father-in-law to get it going again.
A lot of the posts about this engine say it is a b**ch to figure out and maybe not worth it. I must say I am glad I stuck to it, and hope to get a few more good years out of the boat. My in-law kept it covered and stored right so it almost looks new, hard to believe for a 40 year old boat.

So, if you have one of these cantakerous motors just know, it can be done!
Again, thanks I-boat forums!

Welcome skyryder. I'm glad to hear you were able to get your boat up and running again and that you found the forums helpful. I am fairly new here and have found so much helpful info and support on my new project. I would have been lost without this forum.

I've been around here about a year, and though I don't post that often, I'm always learning new tricks thanks to the fellas here. This site is invaluable, so all you other members have my thanks too!

Re: Thanks to the i-boat forums

I here you I've only been on here about a month and have become addicted. I just bought a boat and it needs a bunch of work that I never would have attempted before having no working knowledge of boats or two stroke engines but I threw up some questions and got a lot of advice and encouragement and I'm starting to work thru it. I'm about to pull my carbs for a good cleaning and possible rebuild and am feeling surprisingly confident about it knowing if I get stuck I can come here and will most likely gat any help I need. Everyone here seems to be great. I think I'm a fan for life.
