I found this site looking for insight on getting my old 71 60 HP Johnson running again. I was given a 71 Glassmaster from my father-in-law about ten years ago. He had not had it in the water for many years, actually only used the boat very little. I trailered it from SC to Texas and put a battery in, rebuilt the carbs, put a new water pump in, and new points and that sucker fired up! I run it several summers and then I let it sit for a couple of summers and the carbs gummed up again. Well I decided to get it on the water again this spring.

I rebuilt the carbs again but I couldn't get it to run right. I tinkered with it, and searched the threads here and found a lot of info on this particular engine, 60ESL71C. First, I checked the compression to see if it was worth replacing some other parts and that was good. So after replacing the coil, amplifier, fuel pump, and removing the clipper she is humming along great. I used the info I found here to troubleshoot, along with the original manual from my father-in-law to get it going again.
A lot of the posts about this engine say it is a b**ch to figure out and maybe not worth it. I must say I am glad I stuck to it, and hope to get a few more good years out of the boat. My in-law kept it covered and stored right so it almost looks new, hard to believe for a 40 year old boat.

So, if you have one of these cantakerous motors just know, it can be done!
Again, thanks I-boat forums!
