Congratulations. Sounds like a motor to keep with you for a long time, especially if you worked hard to buy it. I had a motor this same model, myself and they're one of the best ever made, I think. Take good care of 'er and you'll be able to pass it down.

Stories like this intrique me and make me happy. When I hear about folk who dig in and learn by doing I get that "old time feeling" back again. Back in 1969 when I first got started on marine engines I had a mentor to help me out. Sure I had 12 years of schooling but when I made it to Master Marine Mechanic it was because I asserted myself to KNOW how the parts worked.

Today you are lucky, this forum has many great ideas on "how to" fix, repair and maintain your outboard. The info is free for the taking and advice is like butts.. we all have one. Finding out for your self is the best learning tool I ever learned from. Grab up/learn all about "WHY" parts work then you'll be able to decipher the most difficult problems.

Kudos to you! :D
