Thanks to all who offered advice, I was able to remove the powerhead from my 1962 RX-10 28hp in order to replace the upper shift rod. Everything went smoothly until I lifted the powerhead off and half the gasket stayed behind and tore in half.

I was able to trace the pieces of the old one onto some appropriate gasket material to make a new one. Also had to remove the starter to reach one of the nuts that held it together.

With the new rod in, I reasembled everything and she fired right up and shifted just like new. While I had the motor in a barrel, I went ahead and ran half a can of engine tuner through it. Lots of white smoke! I let it sit for an hour and then started it up and let it run for about 15 minutes.

Hopefully, everything is reassembled right, I did not have any parts left over. Once again, thanks for all your help. And thanks too to Dan Gano for supplying the part.

John
