I am thinking about buying a 1959 texas maid. The owner says it's in good condition except for some small leaks. He wants to lay down some "tar" to fix this. Says it has some possible loose rivets also. I'm wondering how common it is for transom rot on these boats, and would him laying down that substance only create more work for me later if it's a structural issue?

:( I have no problem doing some work on the boat myself, I just don't want to take on something huge. He wants 900 bucks. I have never owned a boat and would love some feedback.

That Texas Maid should be a great boat. If you to buy it, do not let that owner do a THING to it. We'll show you how to properly work on it after you get it. Sealing the leaks with the appropriated products (rivet tightening and Gluvit) and transom replacement on that boat are not difficult jobs.

Yeah, I really like the way they look restored. How much would you offer him? 900 seems steep for a boat that I can't test in any way. I also felt like he wasn't really honest with me-he seemed a little annoyed by my questions and also the last e-mail I got seemed to be from his wife-I'm not sure who I was talking to-it was weird. Anyway, I told him not to tar that floor as it would only make more work for the next owner because they'd have to go back in and fix the faulty rivets to make it sound.

I also saw a question on a forum from about five years ago from a man with his name(uncommon man name) asking how to do the exact same thing-the rivets-and he has owned his boat for about six, so I deduced (could be wrong) that might be him and wondered why the boat has rivet problems again. Maybe he didn't do the job correctly.

Also, he hasn't run the engine since last year. Anyway, tell me what ya think would be a fair offer.

I don't know what motor it is. However, there's probably easily $900 worth of stuff there so $900 is probably a fair price. However, I'd offer $500-600 and negotiate from there.

That's a $1000 motor on there. (little dirty and beat though but I wouldn't be overly concerned).

I offered 600 to them if they don't sell for asking price it to someone else. I figure if they take it or want to barter a little I'm meant to have it, if not I keep looking.

I'd probably be more interested in something already water ready if it wasn't a classic, but I like that little boat, and I bet it would look really good restored.

That's a good approach corissa. Let us know how it goes. Something tells me you'll own a '59 Texas Maid pretty soon.;)

And it's aluminum too! Are all texas maids aluminum? I've been looking for aluminum boats(at the suggestion of iboaters) and I come up with nada unless it's a jon boat. Anyway, ya'll cross yer fingers for me...

They had both fiberglass and aluminum. I dont know all the years they made them at least 1957-63.
