Testing stator/bypass ing burned spot

I have a known bad section on my stator, visibly oheated and burned. It supplies AC voltage for cd box for the 3/4 cyl. Spec is 600ish to 850ish ohms, I have 1.2 megomhs ( Correction, k ohms, 1,200 ohms ) It seems to run fine..but at times, power (speed) goes away, will come back after sitting a bit. Can I take the Good stator sectionand use those wires that supply cd box for # 1-2 cylnder, and use that ac voltage to power the box for 3/4 at the same time for test purposes?

Cash flow is down, we are going on vacation in a few weeks, and my loving " Minister of Finance" has put a lockdown on all spending until vacation is over. Otherwise, I'd just get a new stator now instead of later.

1.2 meg ohms means its basically open circuit..does the wire look too thin for you to re wind it yourself ? The magnets and coils are syncronised to charge the capacitor in the Capacitor Discharge Igniton or CDI box prior to a spark being required..so it is unlikley that using the other coil will be a success or the makers would not have fitted two ....

Re: Testing stator/bypass ing burned spot

I'm sorry, I meant K ohm 1,200 ohms... When I researched "how cdi works", it appears that this is just a steady ac voltage, no timing, triggers, etc. involved. It looks like 5 poles for each cd box, the other ten for charging. I suspect there is a million feet of thin wire to wrap, and also, the insulation is welded and melted. I've never rewound, but I'm game to try if you can tell me how!

I have a three cylinder 90 that I did just that on: Used one winding to power both CD boxes. The engine starts and runs in the driveway but I have not yet tested it at high or full throttle operation on the water.

I suspect it will not do well because the manufacturer did not put two windings on the stator core for the hell of it. Two cylinder engines have a blank section of the core where the second set of windings would go.

hmmm.... maybe it's got 2 sections for greater reliability, or like a "fail safe" if one section of stator cooks.. I don't plan on trying it, until you play the tester, Frank!!

BTW, I didn't plan on unhooking the other half of the stator, I was just adding the voltage to the 3/4 box from the 1/2 section. I mean, even the bad section is still operating ok, as far as I know.

Playing with fire there Bob. If you keep the 3-4 section attached to the terminals and if the 3-4 section of stator has a short in it, then voltage from 1-2 will preferentially go there instead of charging the capacitors.

You know you have a problem--would you rather get caught on the water and expensively towed in or replace the stator in the driveway? I know what I want to do. I hate to throw away money.

Explain the economics and aggravation factor to the minister of finance and she will undoubtedly ok an up-front expenditure. ---Or, she'll tell you not to use the boat. LOL

She'll tell me use the Johnboat until after vacation......

You're right Frank, it runs ok as is now, I think what I'll do is just get another stator, and explain the money away as " Don't ask questions, our anniversary is a few weeks away".. She'll think I got her something on the sly.. and I won't be lying.. a new stator!.. Can you check your inventory?

Just stencil " Happy Anniversary Mary! Six wonderful years " on it for me first. :^)
