My procedure was to turn on engine with muffs -drive was in neutral walked back to engine and moved the v type clip until it touched the switch and nothing happened.

you can haer it cutout when you shift at least i can. under load you would have a tough time shifting, it will with lots of force on shifter, which cant be good for cable.

Ayuh,... Forget the V-block,... Depress the Switch,... About 3/16"- 1/4",... The motor should Stall...

The right way is to be under load in the water to test the shift interrupt switch, But with experience you can get a basic idea if it is going to work or not Just by shifting it on the trailer. Also there is a test in the service manual that if you have too people you could set and adjust and confirm the switch is ending up in the right place it needs to be to work right by turning and holding the prop one way while in gear with a load on it and look to see if the arm of the roller is pushing the switch in so it will kill the engine for a quick second to make it easyr to go into and out of gear, And then when you release the prop the shift lever assy mounted on the engine where the shift switch is will pop back in to the V area if it is aujusted right.

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

Checking the shift interrupt switch has nothing to do with shifting. It can be done in the water out of the water, or even take the switch out of the boat.
Disconnect both wires put an ohm meter between the 2 leads of the switch. With the swich released, no continuity.
Push the switch down till you hear it click, should have continuity with little resistance.

Now, the question is, what are you actully trying to figure out. Tell us what your problem actually is, not how to test something that may not be your problem.

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

drive wasnt going back into neutral well. So before i yank off the lower cable i wanted to make sure the interrupt was working correctly.

What exactly does that mean???? Details are helpful. We aren't able to hear, see, or feel what is going on. Only your discription.

Things like:

"Engine dies when going from reverse to neutral"
Or
"Can't get it to come out of gear when shifting from forward to neutral"

Those each mean a different problem, what you said means nothing.

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

sorry don - having trouble getting the boat out of reverse - and getting out of drive -it took some playing around with the shift lever to get it back to neutral. I know common knowledge around hear says lower shift cable is sticking but i want to make sure the switch interrupt is working correctly this is a new to me boat. Thanks for all the interest. It drops into gear fine just doesnt want to come out of gear quickly. It will come out of gear but it has taken much longer than it should.

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

Do you mean you have to push/pull real hard to get it out of gear?
One other minor question. What engine and drive are we working on, and year would help for exact info.

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

from what ive read you say you clicked the switch and it did nothing? your having hard time shifting?

sounds like shift cable siezing and someone disconnected the kill switch caus e it kept stalling on them instead of changing the cable

but thats just an opinion based on not knowing what you are working on :p

Re: Testing shift interrupt switch

turned out that the idle was too high -one of the choke electrical lines came untightened. the boat now idles at 700 rpm and shifts nicely into drive and reverse thanks for all the suggestions guys much appreciated.
