I have a 1996 Merc. 225 hp engine. I get a beep-beep... alarm for about 1 minute when I first start the engine then it stops, and I will not get the alarm for the rest of the day. The engine is getting oil because I check the level in the tank on the boat. The tank on the engine stays full to the top. I was wondering what could cause this alarm to sound and then stop for the rest of the day. The alarm will sometimes beep even before I start the engine and will stop after the engine has run for about 1 minute. To test the alarm, if I turn the tank on the engine upside down while the egine is running will this make the alarm sound?

Re: Testing Oil Alarm

on the top of the oil bottol on the motor there should be a float sensor with a wire going to it. u can remove the sensor from the bottol and test it that way or u can ground the sensor and that should sound the alarm with the ignition on motor does not have to be running.

Re: Testing Oil Alarm

Two tests to try.

1 Pull the wire from the bottom of the fuel/water seperator filter
With the key on, ground the wire, is this the alarm signal you have been getting?

2 Leave the wire off, start the engine, do you still get the alarm?

You may have just enough water accumulation to trigger the alarm, but in that first minute of operation that water is stirred up and stuck to the filter, lowering the water level just enough to the sensor to uncover and thus turn off.
