Recalling my old days with my grandfather and his outboard I know he was able to test the engine out of water with a device and a hose. I have an I/O and am not sure what I do to hook water up to my engine to test it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Ron...depends what I/O you have but a lot of them will let you slide a set of "muffs" on just above the prop where the water intake is and attach the garden hose to them. You can get them at any marine supply place for probably under $10

The muffs were designed primarily for flushing, not for tuning. If you find that you need to do some "tuning" or adjusting on your engine, it is probably best to submerge the prop and exhaust into a tub of water, so as to create some necessary backpressure. Just be sure not to rev it up too much if you have to put it in gear and leave the muffs on if the water doesn't cover the intakes.

The owner's manual should tell you how exactly to do this. If you have a boat without an owner's manual you probably need to get an manual, they have them on this site.

This is a pretty basic thing to know how to do with your boat. You would probably do good to get a manual a read through it before you take it out on the water.

There is a hose in the bottom of the boat. It looks like it is hooked to a on/off valve that is connected to the engine. Is this for running it out of water?
