What is the method used to determine if a gimbal bearing is in good shape?

Reach in and turn it. If it's smooth, it's good. If you feel any roughness what-so-ever, it's bad and will start making noise soon.

PS: NOT a Merc-O-Phile ;)

Hmmm! Must be a Volvorine then, huh?:p

Can you get to it from the outside if it is bad?

Thanks again!

Oh, and BTW Don, it helps to have the hydraulic pump grounded.

From the outside of what?
All you have to do is pull the drive, from there you can check and/or replace the gimbal bearing. You don't have to pull the engine if that is what you mean.

Here is a couple of links you might like if you are planning on being a Merc Tech. May not have everything, but some things you may find usefull.
HINT: You need service manual #6 for the drive.

Also for some quick reference try this one.

We'll get you trained in something other than those OMC drives yet :p

Gee whiz! Merc has more manuals than an OMC drive has parts!

Probably because they are still in buisness
