How do I test the coil on a B100 4 stroke outboard? I changed the points and still have no spark. Is there anything else it might be?

Re: Testing a Honda Coil?

I might be onto to something here. I just disconnected the plug wires and all of the wires from the coil. The coil is mounted to the block and I'm still getting continuity from the post on the coil to ground. To me that means there is a short inside the coil. Any input from the experts? :(

Dealers usually have a coil tester ... take the coil to a dealer and have him test it. The high voltage side of a coil should not show 0 ohms to ground.

Actually I did take the coil to the dealer when I went to order the points. He told me that he couldn't test it unless it was on the motor. It looks like I have no choice but to spend another $80 for a coil.

A simple test for a coil is to flash a 1 1/2 Volt flashlight battery accross the primary of the coil and observe the spark accross the sparkplug. It is about half strength but will test the coil. Open the points with a credit card and go accross them if you don't want to disconnect anything.

Do you mean from the coil post to the ground?
