I am just about ready to test out my 1985 50hp evinrude. I have read some notes about people using a tank ect. My question is can I use the garden hose adapter (the one that looks like suction cups)? Is that safe?

Any tips appriciated
Thanks

Re: Test Trial

yes, it's safe, for cranking, starting, idling. Don't rev it up though. Be aware that running on muffs will not give you any indication of how well it runs on the water. Submerging the underwater exhaust puts a load on the engine that isn't there in the driveway.

What is your recommendation for putting the load on it? We live an hour away from water. Long haul to not have it run correctly.

Re: Test Trial

Check that it starts and idles well on the muffs. Leave a little early on your next trip to the water to check wot rpms and timing. Launching in a neighbors pool and tieing up good to their slide is an option also!!! : )
(please stay out of the neighbors pool!)

Running on the muffs is like running an auto with the exhaust system removed. It'll be loud and the timing will actually change a tad due to lack of back pressure (on a car).

And a neighbours pool works great if they have a ramp on it and dont mind the oil/exhaust residue floating around!

I just started a thread on muff use.SoundS like we're in the same boat.
A landscaping barrell or plastic chemical barrell filled with water seems to be an option you should look into.

I highly recommend NOT putting a 50 HP motor in gear in a 50 gallon barrel.

Re: Test Trial

The barrels and the muffs are for flushing and some testing where engine settings are not involved. Neither is good for running in gear or at much above idle. The only advantage to a barrel over muffs is that they are a whole lot quieter.

If you want to set anything, you either need a test prop and test tank, or you need to be on the water.

Re: Test Trial

I have never had much luck keeping the muffs in the proper place on a motor. I went to Wal-Mart and bought a $10.00 trash can and use it for al my testing. I keep the lid on it when not in use to keep dust out. But like mentioned no WOT. This kind of testing is good for adjusting carbs and testing the cooling system. You also can adjust the shifting linkage but only on idle.

Re: Test Trial

what's wrong with using the neighbor's pool. They won't be back from vacation until next week!
