test/repair stand

Included are pictures of the stand I decided to start building today. I don't have a motor on hand to measure, and I'm wondering how far off the top of the trash can I should have the top edge of the mounting surface. Any Ideas? There will be plenty of water, so if I fudge it on the high side there wont be much of an issue.

Re: test/repair stand

Set it up with the anti-ventilation plate (aka cavitation plate) is well below the top of the water container. You want it to stay under water when the engine is running (probably idling) in gear, which churns the water quite a bit.

How big is the engine? The following won't work with a large engine, but, for my kickers (a 9.8 long shaft and a 15 short shaft), I use a large plastic rectangular container placed lengthwise, slid between the legs of the stand, so the engine is easy to tilt in and out of the water. I can run the engine (high idle) in forward and reverse. Reverse splashes very little water out, but still puts load on the prop for tuning idle. I can easily keep up with water loss with the garden hose. Forward splashes the water out pretty quickly, but I can still do that for short periods of time.

I can't remember which size, but it's one of these which I bought at either Lowes or Home Depot: http://www.rubbermaid.com/Category/...e=Storage&SubcatId=Roughneck&Prod_ID=RP091418

I'm using a "store-bought" outboard stand, and just picked the largest one I could find that fit inside the legs of the stand. If I was building one, I'd pick the container first and then design the stand so it would straddle the container so it would be easy to tilt the engine in and out of it.

Hope that makes sense.

PS: did you check the thread at the top of this forum: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=266570

I dont have a motor for it right now. I repair small engines and have 3 people lined up wanting me to repair water pumps and carbs. I'm trying to build a stand that will accomdate a range of motors. I think I have it tall enough I can raise the water level to suite most motors.

This probably won't be too difficult - there's only about 3 different shaft lengths regardless of hp.
