Test for Oil in mix?

Is there a way to test if there is oil being used in the cylinders?
I recently fired my 1987 70hp 3 cyl and found it to not smoke very much. It was the first fire up of the season and usually it smokes like crazy. The alarm went off when I first fired it up and went away after 30 seconds or so. I am using quicksilver oil not synthetic.

Thanks
Grant

Grant, The test is not too scientific. Run the motor on a tank of 50::1 premix, and see if the motor uses any oil from the engine oil tank or the boat tank. If the oil level drops the motor is injecting oil.

Thanks Chris,

I thought of that but I was concerned that the extra oil would foul the plugs.
I'd rather buy a new set of plugs than a new powerhead though.

The extra oil might foul a plug, but probably not. No oil will stick a piston. Which do you prefer?
