Hello: I have a 1984 19' searay that I have completely restored to showroom condition. It has a 4.3L V6 chevy engine and a alpha 1 outdrive. I keep my boat in a covered boat garage at our lake place and at the end of last season as I was going to pull her out of the water for the winter I overheated and completely burned up the upper & lower water pump in the lower unit. The engine got pretty hot and burned holes in the rubber elbows on both exhaust manifolds and also burned the hydrallic trim tubes and the exhaust bellows. So anyway my boat was a mess! Over the winter I checked compression to make sure there was no damage to the heads etc. I also pulled the engine & replaced the main water seal around the Y tube and the outdrive. I also replaced hydrallic tubes with ss tubes & new rubber elbows, flappers & rebuilt the lower unit with gunuine mercruiser parts and replaced the shift cable and all bellows and gimbal bearing for good measure.
The problem: I put her in the water and drove 60 miles around the the lake with no problems except a little water leaking from the power steering cooler so I took the cooler to a radiator shop and had them fix it. I guess Iover tightened a clamp. So I took the boat out again and had no leaks but now the temp gage is creeping up and the engine smells hot. I ran her at 5000 rpms for ten minutes and the temp gauge creeped past 200 which is too hot. Any suggestions as to what my problem is? She normally runs at 160 to 180 max and never smells hot. By the way I never did find the failure mode from the problem last fall other than the pump in the lower unit was completely melted. I have no idea what caused that as the impeller was still in tact. Thanks in advance!
