I have a Capri 18 with fin keel. What should the tension reading be on the upper and lower shrouds?

I never used a gauge, just sighted up the mast while on a good beat...adjusting the tension by feel and sight.

The weather shrouds should keep the mast straight, the lee shrouds can be a little loose but not floppy.

Anyway, that's how we did it while living aboard our B27 for 3 years.

Thanks for the reply. I just ordered a tension gauge and was wondering what the lbs should be.

Have you checked the Catalina specification sheet or spoken with the owner's support group for tips?

Re: tension on wire rigging

Generally, boat designers specify shrouds to operate at about 25% of breaking strength. So look up the breaking strength for the diameter of your wire, and divide by 4 or 5; you will have a good starting point to tune your rig.
