I own a 1986 60HP Johnson VRO.

It has a temperature switch (original OMC P/N 0386686). I want to connect a temperature gauge to the engine. Is it possible to connect a gauge to the original switch. Or is it just an 'off/on' switch for the warning signal?

If it won't work with the original is there any posiblitity to connect a working sensor? Cause the sensors i can find are al screwed in (1/4, 1/2 of 3/8 NPT). And looking to some pictures, my sensor is 'non-screwed' in.

Not sure on the 86' model, but look for a threaded hole on the starboard side of the engine. It may have a plug in it...Looks Like this:

Okay nice thanks!!!

When i come home this weekend, it will be the first thing i check!

I suppose this is a fitting for a 'regular' temp. sensor? Which screw type is used? (1/4, 1/2 or 3/8 NPT)

Update:

If there is no hole i will use the following solution:

A. Buy FAR13113, which is a Faria Cylinder Head temperature kit

OR

B. Buy Teleflex parts 52320S010 (temp. sensor or 52320E010 for european folks) and bracket IA55009. (z bracket to mount temp. sensor on cylinder head)

OR

C. Buy a Teleflex partnr. 63525, wich is a Cylinder Head Temp Kit.

Hope this will help other people with the same problem.

Most of the screw in style temp sensors are for 100 - 240 degree gauges. That's why the sender needs to match the gauge. The sensors you are looking at will typically register very low on the gauge. There are also two types of senders. Water temp (measures water temperature as its sticks into the water jacket) and head temperature (measures the temperature of the head) since the sender is in physical contact with the head -- not water. Yes -- there is a difference. The temperature nearer the plug will be hotter than at the outer edges of the head.

You suggest an other sender?
