Hi guys I just purchased a used temperature guage for my 87 bayliner fish and ski with a 125 force on it.My question is , can I wire it from the orange wire on the motor or can I wire it from the buzzer. Also what wires go where on the back of the guage. Thanks

Re: temperature guage wiring

You need a special sending unit to go with your gauge. The sending unit is screwed into a port into the water jacket of the motor. You cannot tap into the orange wire that goes to the sensor for the buzzer. You need a separate wire between the temperature gauge sending unit and the gauge.

Most temp. gauges have a 12V DC power terminal, a ground terminal, and a terminal for the wire that goes to the sending unit. May also have a separate terminal for a gauge light if the gauge has a bulb.

Be aware that your outboard motor runs much colder than most cars. The outboard will probably run around 120?F - 130?F. If the lowest reading on your gauge is say 100?F - 120?F, the needle will barely move.

I put in a telltale from the top I'd like to keep so do I drill another hole for the sender .The guage I have is from a 87 bayliner ,it's the same as my other guages with 3 prongs in the back .Does anyone know where I might get a sending unit

Sierra unit might work. Hard to tell unless you try it. Drilling a new hole is a little risky. You need to know exactly where to drill. Here's what another person did. He used a "T" fitting. Both his Tell Tale and sending unit come off the same hole. Sending unit is on the left with the wire going to it, Tell Tale hose is on the right.

You could go with a block temp gauge. See pic

Re: temperature guage wiring

In my honest opinon I think that the block sensor is the better of the two. This will give the actual temp of the motor. If you go with the water temp your degrees may be skewed. Here's why: If you drill a hole on top of the thermostat housing you are measuring the temp of the water that went up the leg and through the front of the motor. At the t-stat the water can either go through the t-stat or out to the relief ports. If you could measure the temp after the water made its way around the cylinders and the water jacket, at that point would be a actual temp of the motor. Hope this helps.

Re: temperature guage wiring

The placement of the thermostat is placed in the water jacket after the water has circulated through the block. Just the opposite of an automotive engine.

Water enters the motor on the left side and flows upward through the exhaust cover. Then it enters the water jacket around the cylinders on the left side and flows downward. Then it flows upwards on the right side of the water jacket around the cylinders. It then goes through the thermostat and passes through the head and gets dumped out of the engine block.

NOTE: The water pressure relief valve on the diagram was only on the early motors.

Re: temperature guage wiring

For wiring?? Some harneses(maybe) have a brown wire taped back. It's for a trim sender on most motors or a second alarm??
Yours might have this, maybe not.Look under the dash or back at the engine harness.
It's easy to run a wire from the rear to the dash.
Don't disconnect the original.
I almost NEVER have my eyes on the guages as I motor around.
But my ears can definatly hear the buzzzz.J
