Is a variable resistance sender required to obtain proper temp readings or is the stock temp sender capable of sending correct temp readings to the gauge via the stock tan wire? Thanks..

If you've installed a new gauge from a different manufacturer I would go with their temp sensor (sender).

By the way, all (including merc's) have a variable resistance sender which are called thermisters. Thermisters are resistors than have a temperature dependent resistance.

Good luck

Thanks Andy,

That's the exact info I needed.I installed a Teleflex temp gauge about one month ago but I'm still using the factory temp sender. It seems to be reading the temps OK @ 120* to 130*

Does that sound like the correct range under normal operation? Thanks Again

As for the 120-130 degree range...
I am not sure whether your sensor reads metal or water temps and I don't know the operating temps of your engine, so I can't answer. Maybe someone else will know.
