Is there a place I can install a temp Guage on my Johnson 85hp Javelin motor. Model# 85eltr77s <br />I would like to run temp, tach and volts on this old boat which has no guages. I can figure out the tach and volts relativly easily. But, the temp guage I am not sure. Would I just splice it into one of the coolant hoses at the back of the motor?

There should be a blind tapped hole on the head that you can use a contact thermo and a gage.

The sender for the temp gauge should have an "Z" shaped bracket. Use one of the water jacket cover bolts to hole the bracket/sender in place. We usually place the sender near the middle of one head.

Re: Temp Guage?

So there is no actual in the water passage place to put a guage? Then I will have to try this contanct thermo. I ran the motor for about 15 mins last night with the muffs on and I was still able to touch the sides of the cylinder heads with my hands. Being new to boats I am still a bit nervous about how sea worthy she will be, and as such I am trying to take every precaution to avoid a mishap on the water.

While the temp gauge is a good idea I would suggest that, in addition, you look into a water pressure gauge. A temp gauge tells us what has happened. A water pressure gauge tells us what is happening as far as the cooling system goes.
