Temp gauge for 200HP Mercury

I have a 1992 Mercury 200HP 2.5L offshore motor. I want to install a temp gauge. Where or what could I use as the sensor that would mount to the cylinder? My last motor was a 90HP Johnson and it had a little sensor(thermometer) that pressed right up against the cylinder and It was nice to have.

Just wanted to do the same for this motor. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Faria and Teleflex both have temp gauges and the related sensor. You generally need to order the sensor separately unless the gauge description specificatlly says its included. Make sure you buy a gauge for an outboard. If you buy one that's calibrated 120 - 240 the needle may rarely leave the peg as gauges calibrated in that range are typically for I/O's that run hotter. An outboard temp gauge will typically be calibrated "Cold - Hot" or in the 100 - 240 range. I've seen some as low as 60 degrees but they are rare. Several types of sensors are also available. Some screw into a threaded port in the water jacket cover. Some replace the existing switch (on-off) style overheat sensor, and others mount in a bracket under a head bolt that forces the tip of the sender against the water cover. Still others are thermocouples that mount under a spark plug or a bolt. One thing to keep in mind is that depending on where you measure temperature, you may be measuring water temperature or head temperature. There will be a difference. How much depends again on where, how, and what you are measuring. A senser installed under a spark plug is actually measuring head temperature and will be the hotest point on the engine. Just make sure you understand what you are buying and when installed, what its actually measuring.

Just answered my own question. Went to the Teleflex site and they don't give much info and you can't order from them. I guess wherever I buy the gauge would be instructions on how to get the sensor?

The following info is from the Teleflex FAQ:

What engine temperature gauge do I use on my outboard?
Teleflex has replaced all of its 50-200 degree O/B temperature kits with a more generic kit that can be used on all outboards having a 12-volt battery. These new kits cover a temperature range of 80-220 degrees. The gauge reads C to H with graduated marks in between for reference. The kit comes complete with gauge, proper sender, brackets, and instruction sheet that adapt it to almost any outboard engine. For replacement parts, sender IA96035 must be used with a 50-200 degree gauge. Sender 52320S010 must be used with a C-H gauge. If an IA96035 sender is used with a C-H gauge, the gauge will read at the 200-degree area very quickly. The 120-240 degree stern drive temperature gauge can be used but it will register temperatures in the low temperature area (on most engines) when engine operates normally. The numbers on the face may have no real meaning as actual temperatures. Sender 52320S010 must be used. If sender requires a bracket for installation, use bracket IA55009.

Thanks for all of the info8) So what you are saying is that I need to use the gauge that shows C(cold) to H(hot) and doesn't display the numbers? I am sure you told me above but could you give me the part number for the gauge and sender that I would need? Would this site have it? Thanks

You want a C-H gauge (any of them for an outboard).
Sender 52320S010 must be used with a C-H gauge.
bracket IA55009 is needed for sensor mounting if it does not screw into a threaded port on the engine.

No. 16 gauge will be fine. You will also need a package of ring terminals that you will crimp onto the ends of the wires. Any store that sells boating supplies will have the ring terminals and wire. They are also available at any auto parts store although the wire won't be marine grade. The following connections need to be made:

Instrument light - connect to the light terminal on an adjacent gauge.
+12V when the key is on -- Connect to the +12V terminal on the tachometer, voltmeter, or fuel gauge.
Ground -- Connect to the ground terminal on an adjacent gauge.
Sense line - Connects to the sensor on the engine.
