Temp. Gauge Doesn't

I have a 1989 120 with what appears to be an aftermarket temp gauge mounted on the console of my Mako 171. Gauge doesn't read anything. Any ideas where the sender might be located? I assume in a water passage somewhere like on a car, right? Once I find it, any idea how I check it with a volt-ohmmeter? <br /><br />Thanks!

The sending uniy is on the head near the sparkplug.you should see a wire with a small nut connecting it .The wire usually breaks where it goes through the front of the engine cover. Charlie
