Temp buzzer sounding 120HP '91

I started my engine for the first time today. Motor was honed and bored so:

1.) 3 new std rings
2.) 1 new .010 OS piston and rings

The motor throttle has only been in the gearshift lock position and that is enough play for what I am doing. The first time the engine got hot and the alarm went off. I took out the thermostat and ran it without it. It didn't seem to be a problem.

3.) 1 new thermostat (it works, I tested in boiling water on hot plate)

Put it back in and a few extra revs after a number of minutes the alarm went off.

4.) the exhaust cover is nice and cool. The head is hot and I can only keep my hand on the fins and thermostat cover cover for 4 seconds.

5.) I am only using ear muffs and the amount of water coming out the tell tale is weak but hot.

Question 1: Is it because of the new components and poor water flow from the ear muffs that my engine is overheating?

I have also noticed some smoke coming from the tell tale holes. I checked plugs and are all oily so it can't be pin holes in the exhaust baffle.

Question 2: Is it possible some exhaust is sneaking past the rubber seal inside the leg?

Any other ideas on this smoke question?

Thermostat is in right according to the clymers manual: spring of thermostat is recessed into the head.

A new impeller was installed as part of the rebuild. There is a bit of water wastage from the muffs. When I compress the two sides there is better flow from the pee holes. It is difficult to hold them and give a slight rpm increase to when I am on my own. increase in revs does increase flow too. I really need a test tank or different muffs that seal better.

Whoever designed the location for the water intake on these motors should be flogged.

Dry off your lower unit, attach muffs, and seal in place with duct tape. Sounds hokey but will do the job.

I did what you said and the temp gauge didn't sound. I ran the motor for 40 minutes I guess at fast idle or less with the odd in gear rev. So it worked.

I have a bit of water coming from the bullet exhaust so i guess the Rubber that seals the engine exhaust to the inside leg is not working?
