a few seasons ago i blew my head gasket on my '84 70hp. this happened due to the fact that i forgot to add the oil. as i think about it, the alarm never sounded. how can i test it and it is located in the control box, correct ? i have just put a replacement motor on ('78 70hp) and do not want to have this happen again

Re: temp alarm

right, the horn is in the control box.

overtemp circuit test:
find the gray wire coming off the temp switch near the top of the cylinder head...peel back the rubber sleeve covering the connector and touch it (the connector) to the cylinder head (keyswitch "on"), a steady tone should sound.

If you want, you could test the temp switch in a pot of water on the stove with a kitchen thermometer, using a continuity tester. should switch on around 163? F.
