I am new to this site and new to outboard motor mechanics in general, so first of all thank you in advance for any information you all may be able to give me. I have recently purchased a 1976 Johnson Seahorse 9.9hp Model 10R76H and my question is does this engine have a tell tale or "pee" hole that will spray water when ever the engine is running? From my preliminary research on this site and others I am inclined to think that it does not. Rather, I am inclined to believe that excess water drains out the exhaust relief vent hole. What should I see when I fire this engine up when submersed in a 50 gallon tank of water?

I recently got a '75 Evinrude 9.9 and it has no tell tale. It only has the combined round exhaust/water exit on the back leg near the top. So I assume you have the same. when I run mine in the barrel it shoots the water out of the barrel from this hole.

Water will only spray out that hole when the thermostat is open. Should be dry for first 20 seconds or so when started cold, and then will just spray water.. not a steady stream..

Steve, I've got the tap and fitting if you want to install one.

If you have muffs/ ears on it, then it may never fill the mid section/exhaust housing to the top and come out of the hole they refered to as the exhaust releif. If you put it in a tank/can then the water will come out in a fine spray once the hopusing fill up, and this takes a while, up to a minute or so. The spray will increase and get warm once the thermostat opens. It is possoble to add barb fitting fitting to the exhaust port cover and run a line from it through a hole you can drill in the lower cover to create a "pee-hole" tell tail stream like on later models, but this is really not needed if you just replace the impeller regularly, and check the exhaust releif for water flow when running. If you read up on these engines, the small diameter tell-tail tends to clog easily due to corrosion and debris clogging it. a link follows: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

about 1/2 to 2/3 rds the way down the page of this link it shows how to add a tell-tail to 1974-76 models. I have never bothered with it though.
