tell tale not working at idle

when the motor is in gear and idling, it will not draw water out the tell tale. When the motor is slightly powered it will spit water. When powered at about 1/5 throtle the tell tale is working great. The motor is a merc kicker 7.5 circa early 80's. thanks

tell tale spews exhaust when not working properly. could this be a gasset issue?

does the engine over heats?

you probably have a bad impeller, or an obstracted water system.

check the impeller, remove the thermostat, check it's condition, and use water or preassure air to see if something it's coming out from the thermostat housing, when you connect the air or water hose the the water tube of the water pump or to the tell tail.

1st try to wiggle a thin piece of wire down the tell tale pipe while the motor is running and see if it improves, if it doesn't pull the thermostat and check if it is wokring or if there is no obstruction there and then test again, if all else fails you have to replace the impeller ...... remember to spray deep penitrating oil on the bolts you wanto remove about 15 min before, otherwise you might twist a bolt off, and that is a nightmare ...... good luck ....

Dont think that has a T-stat does it?
