tell tale not spraying water after impeller replacement

i have about a 78-79 mercury 20 and we had just changed the impeller before taking it out to the lake.. when we got it out there we noticed no water coming from tell tale, and noticed powerhead getting a little hot.. the thing that concerns me is that there is a little bit of smoke coming from the tell tale when u try to start her up.. she quit working by the way dbut that has nothin to do with her.. i was just wonderin if u guys could give me any ideas.. thanx

are you sureyou fitted the impeller the right way round?
