You have to determine if it's the helm, cable, or motor. It's usually the cable, but I've run across stuck steering on the motor itself (mostly in saltwater). Or in the steering tube where it passes thru the motor. But if the cable itself is the problem, replace it. If you free it, it will be stiff, and it will freeze-up again.

If you find out that the stuck part is where the cable end goes through the motor's tilt tube, here is something to try.

Disconnect the cable end from the outboard steering arm. Put a pipe wrench on the end of the cable. Spray the cable to tilt tube joint with penetrating oil and "rock" the cable end back and forth using the pipe wrench. If you can move it at all, eventually you will get it loose. Turn the wheel to expose as much of the cable end as possible and grease it well.

Re: teleflex steering, won't move.

Well timing for you is perfect. I just bought a boat; 3 yrs old, fresh water; mostly shedded. Bass boat, aluminum, side console, rack and pinion, Morse/Teleflex.

Took 2 hands to steer the thing. Trying to dock or put the boat on a trailer (especially in a cross wind) was an absolute joke.

Tried lots of things to correct it, but after testing found it was in the cable. Went to www and got on the go2marine web site and shopped their stuff. Ordered a replacement.

While I was waiting, I decided to see if it was where I thought it was which was a slight kink at the engine's clamp bracket. Cut the cable with a grinder, no way a hacksaw would cut it.

Couldn't move that end by hand. Went to the other end, couldn't move it either. Remounted the steering wheel to it in a shop vise and still could barely move it). So the whole thing was binding internally.

Got the replacement yesterday and I could move the engine steering end all the way in and out with my bare hands with little effort....the way it should be. Can't wait to get her in today.

Teleflex said that they had problems with their older cables and it was apparently a design problem. I believe it.

You'll love you new one.

HTH

Mark

Tash..... got my cable today and installed it. Night and day. Can steer with one finger rather than 2 hands. Now I'll be griping about steering torque. Oh well, gotta gripe about something. At least I can get on the trailer.

On dogs. I have a mix siberian and shepherd. Has one eye from each; blue and brown.

Mark

Tash. We love ours. Picked her up at the SPCA. Wife went in to the cage area; all but one (her) were jumping all over the fence and barking and all. She was just standing there looking at my wife....She came home with her. Grin.

Mark
