My motor is a 1982 70 hp evinrude, E70ELCNB

I just bought these controls, but they do not match my setup.

...OMC and Johnson/Evinrude style single lever controls found on 1979 to current models.

I bought the motor rebuilt years ago, am I right to assume that maybe my power pilot control box is earlier than 1979, so the current replacement cables I need are actually the teleflex 400 series?

Teleflex Control Cable for Johnson, Evinrude & OMC

Here are some pictures of my current old cables I want to replace. Notice the cables themselves are a bare wire at the end, attached to the plastic arm by a set screw rather than an all-in-one like the Teleflex 479 Series.

If I know for sure the 400 series is what I need I'll return these, otherwise it looks like I can rig the connection at the control box and it should still work. I only question if thats what I need because the image appears to show something bulbous at the end of the wire, where mine is just a clean wire if you remove the set screw (checked only at the control side).

Re: teleflex controls dont match

Hi, I just recently bought a pair of teleflex cables for my PRE 1979 Johnson, they came with no ends, those things on the end of the wires are just rubber boots to keep it from puncturing stuff, they pull right off. So you can't remove your new ends and install the old ones? I'm not real familiar with cables but I'm wondering if you didn't receive the wrong ones.

The ends don't appear to come off the (just purchased) post 1979 cables.

At the motor (the black end ) there's no problem, but where it meets the control box this silver end does not match or come off.

I mean, the length is identical, if I just remove the old plastic arm on the contol box side, and mount the new (silver end) in its place it seems like it would be fine, except for a little play because the holes are different sizes... I might try to do that actually

Ok, I think you're right, your control box must be older than 1979. The motor side should be fine because the pre 79 cables I got worked fine on my 1994 Johnson but I'm using the old 2 lever control box. So had you got the pre 79 cables I think you'd be fine. Might as well try the ones you got, if need be you should be able to make/find some kind of bushing to eliminate the slop.

You need the old style cable to make it work. You will need to re use the ends.
