Teleflex CH2600 Controls/Honda 100 Outboard Question

Hello, we just bought a 1984 Livingston with a Honda 100 outboard and Teleflex controls. This seems crazy, but we CANNOT figure out how to get it into gear. The throttle/gear shift appears to be a Teleflex CH2600 like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Teleflex-CH2.../dp/B0000C6FCT/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pb_opt?ie=UTF8

We can get it into neutral and give it gas so the throttle piece seems to work, but we can't figure out how to engage forward/reverse gear. Is anyone familiar with these controls? What is the procedure for getting it into gear? We have pushed and pulled very hard on the lever, and it won't budge. There's no obvious button on either side to unlock it. There's a piece on top that kind of rocks back and forth, but that didn't seem to do anything, either. Any advice? Thank you!

These controls all work the same way; push-pull shift, and either pull-only or push-only for throttle. Open the cowl and operate the control box and see what happens.

Thanks! But I think I’m still not sure how to actually get it into gear. It will not budge in either direction unless I push in the button at the bottom of the control lever to rev it in neutral.

If you disconnect the cable at the motor, will the control operate?

There's nearly always a lock out of some sort to prevent a bump from allowing it to engage in gear. I'm not familiar with that control, so I can't tell you where it's at.

USUALLY, they are located on the bottom of the knob you would have your hand on when driving, allowing quick easy use you don't even think about. You squeeze the lock button with your finger tips to release the throttle/shifter arm from the neutral position. It should NOT require the use of a second hand like the start up mode requires.

Noteworthy, is that if the prop is in the wrong position with the engine stopped, it's not going to shift. Turning the prop a quarter turn may allow it to shift. With the engine running, this would never be an issue.

@Paul: We will try that!

@ahicks: There definitely isn't a lock button on the bottom of the knob. We do have another boat (1990 Reinell 17' open bow) so I'm not unfamiliar with boat controls, but this one is stumping me. The only pieces that move are the start up mode/neutral button on the bottom, and the cover on the very top that seems to rock back and forth a bit. We will also try turning the prop a bit. Thanks!
