Any recommendations? Laptop speakers have no volume. If you want to get up and work around the kitchen while listening to a program, forget it.

I would like to find some very small speakers, maybe powered by USB, that I could hang up under a kitchen desk cabinet, above the laptop, and at least get some decent volume. I don't need them to be high fidelity, just small, ie, maybe a couple of inches square or round.

look in the cell phone isle for powered speakers. about 40 different ones to choose from. I think the ones the wife got were about $15 each, were about 2" round, and about 1" collapsed, 2" when opened. you can plug them into each other. Pretty decent sound.

Look at the Bluetooth speakers. A little bigger, but use their own power.

... easier to put 'em in a more hidden spot too as they don't require a cable. Plus you can swap sources easy enough.

Don't those use batteries? Or can you also just leave them plugged into a wall outlet. The wireless would be a neat feature. Wouldn't need any wire snaking down the desk to the laptop.

Yes.

There are types that run on battery (easy to move room to room as opposed to mounting), some with adapters to plug into the wall and/or USB to the computer.
