Ted Williams 5hp questions

Hi,
I did do a search and found LOTS of info on these little motors.
I just bought one....from the search, it is a 1974 5hp Ted Williams (who the heck is Ted Williams?) Serial #217-59680
I did not pay much for it...only $75. It ran when I bought it, but did not notice that it does not have a reverse or neutral!
The guy who had it before me never put stabil in it, or even looked at the carb, for 2 years!
I'm gonna order the carb kit and impellor(or does it even have an impellor, since it is air cooled)?
I talked to a friend who said I can use regular unleaded gasoline, with an additive, because it says not to use unleaded gas, ONLY LEADED GAS.
But with all the posts, I noticed that JB said I can use regular unleaded gas. Is this true? If so, then why is there a sticker on the o/b that says not to use unleaded gas?
I guess I should change the points too, since it is 33 years old.
Any tips or opinions would be very helpful. I plan on using this monster (haha) this weekend.
Thanks,
B.C.

The powerhead is air cooled, but the exhaust is water cooled, so yes it does have an impeller.

Use unleaded gas with no additives except chainsaw at 32:1 (or 24:1 if you prefer a little more to be safe). Always put stabilizer in the gas. It doesn't use much and the gas can go stale before it gets used.

Ted Williams was a famous baseball player, before my time. He passed a few years ago and the family had a heck of a time deciding what to do with his remains. It was a real circus. :(

It's a Tecumseh powerhead on an Eska leg. You might be able to get powerhead parts thru a lawnmower dealer. There's a tag on the powerhead with the numbers they'd need.

Go to www3.sears.com and have that model number handy. You might be able to find parts diagrams there and maybe even some parts.

Thanks for all the info WillybWright!
I had a 7.5 gamefisher before and Sears had the carb kit for around $20, so yeah, I'm going to call them bout that.
I just read up a bit on Ted Williams too. Interesting stuff.
And thanks for the info on the gas issue too!!!

Re: Ted Williams 5hp questions

Okay, I've been lazy about fixing this motor because all of my friends bought boats and I've just been going cruises with them.
So I put a new spark plug in it, checked for spark(and there is spark), hooked it up to a new gas line(because the inline tank was/is all rusty and not worth using anymore). I also cleaned the carb, but did not put a carb kit in it.
So we tried starting it, and it wants to start, but it just won't.
As much as I hate using quick start, I did....and then it ran, but it died when I stop spraying the quick start in it.
My question is...I guess I have to put a carb kit in it, right? I cant' see any other reason why it would not start(unless it is the points).
Can anyone point me in the right direction...I'd appreciate it.
I've searched iboats for answers and I've read that if there is spark and gas and a clean carb there is no reason why it should not run.
I'm going to go and get a carb kit for it either way, but if I'm missing something, I'd appreciate any tips.
Thanks,
B.C.

You should be working with a manual. You may find one at the library.
If it runs on fluid then it isn't getting gas right.Rebuild the carb with special attention that all passages and jets are clean.Prove it.I think there is a little
fuel pump diaphram in the carb that is a problem.Fails easily and won't work if installed incorrectly.

Thanks Steelespike,
I'll check and see if there is a manual at the library. I already printed off the diagrams for the entire motor.
And yes, the fuel pump diaphram was nasty looking. Definitely needs attention. I'm just off to buy the kit now, providing they have it in stock. Luckily I have a Sears parts depot close to home.

Re: Ted Williams 5hp questions

looks like the fuel pump diaphram is no longer available :(
Anyone got any ideas, besides making it into a paper-weight.
Thanks,
Chris.

Don't give up, yet. Go to certifiedpartscorp.com, then call the number you find there. Tell the guy what you need and give him the sears model number. They have most stuff on hand.

Sears carries very few parts any more for those outboards, but the certified guys have tons of parts.

It's worth a try.
