Re: teak

Howdy, MT.

I use the Star Brite system on my teak.

First I sand it smooth. Then Star Brite teak cleaner, teak brightener, and Gold teak oil.

I reoil it every year or so and do it over about each 3 years.

Good luck. :)

Re: teak

The best I have ever used is Teka 2 part kit.Sand when done lightly and then decide what type of finish. For wood that is outside I use a sealer called Sikens Cetol. It is the most expensive but it lasts years.Teak oil takes about 10 coats after cleaning and looks great for about 2 weeks.Charlie

Cetol is good stuff, but you don't need to spread lies about other products.

Re: teak

I have never used the cleaner but oil weather exposed teak every year and cab and inside teak every two to three years and it looks great. I sometimes do lightly sand the front deck teak every other year or so. All my teak looks great.

Re: teak

Use the 2-part cleaner. It's great stuff. Then finish it how you like. Oil is beautiful but it won't last that well in the weather (my experience anyways). I have Cetol and varnish on my exterior teak. They both seem to wear about the same to me and need a fresh coat about once a year. I like the look of the varnish better but it took 7 coats instead of the 3 for Cetol. The varnish also has a little more problems with water working underneath it if it gets any cracks or deep scratches.

Re: teak

JB - I used the Starbrite oil too and it didn't last that well for me. Is your boat stored covered?

Re: teak

I don't know if this will help but my dad had a lot of teak on his boat and when we needed to clean it we just used bleach water. Then just oiled it. worked great.

Re: teak

Hey JB you could not sell me on the oil if you came over my house and did it for me.I have tried them all over the years and have found the oil process to be the most labor intense of them all and the results fade quickly. Now on the inside of my cabin the oil IS great! For outside teak I put the same effort into A Cetol coating and all I have to do is brush 1 coat on every 2 or 3 years with no special preperation. The teak always looks the same,Fantastic! No fade at all.Always looks like it was done 10 minutes ago.I am going on 6 years with my Cetol job and I have spent less than 1 hour recoating it since then. Charlie
