Last week I got a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me back two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help and while he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Read on...

Teaching math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. Hi Lubedude, that wasn't a fair test, the counter girl didn't have enough fingers and toes to calculate the correct change, next time you hit the BK hold your hands out it in front of you with your palms up, close one hand into a fist, ask the recent high school grad counter girl which hand has the M&M's, most of them will need 2 guesses. :p

Re: Teaching math!

I used to remember that we cannot use calculator when working on calculation problem when I was in school. That was in the 'dark ages' but beleive me we can COUNT then even without the calculator. But now a day, students are allow to use calculator in middle school. That is where all problems start. They need to go back to basic. Do like the chinese does, use the ABACUS. Now that is mental calculation.
