Ok. I have a friend I take fishing with me when he's able to go. The problem is he's terrible. When we're bobber fishing, the bobber will dive & I'm like "dude" (universal for "set the hook"), the problem is he leaves too much slack out & ends up whipping the wind... funny as heck to see him do it twice, whip whip. However I feel bad to correct him. I even showed him, "look, see how tight my line is? I have complete control of that bobber" but it doesnt sink in.
He also thinks the biggest fish are 50 miles from the boat & trys to reach 'em. I tell him I anchor near the fish but it doesnt sink in.
He is good with a beetlespin, maybe I should stick with artificials with him. :D
Anyways, I posted this as a funny little story, but if you have any ideas on how to show him (w/o sounding like a jerk) I'd appreciate it.

Maybe he does not serious about learning to fish. Maybe let him do his thing and maybe he will change.

Dude, you're willing to give up a good source of entertainment, just to teach somebody how to become a better fisherman? You are a true humanitarian! :D :D :D

how about "Sorry dude, I forgot the bobbers, looks like we'll have to tightline it today."

I plan on fishing some this spring although I haven't fished in several years. I remember my last time out, how good it felt just to be out there. Maybe the fish-catching is subordinate to just being there.

Maybe its not the fishn he is interested in so much as being with his friend and sharing some time together.. Just enjoy yourself he is..

If you tell the wife this I'll deny it, but fishing is just something to occupy my hands while spending a day on the water. ;)

well, that, and I like the toys.

Nice to have a great wife isn't it jtexas? Take her with you and maybe your hands will be busy enuff that you don't have to fish. My wife is my fishing buddy when all my other buds are busy. She likes going but not all the time. Sure is fun when she's there.

She has a profound appreciation of nature. I once thought that if I could just get her out in the boat at dawn, mist rising, flora & fauna just coming alive, the alluring smell of a two-stroke...well, you get the picture. It was too cold, she spent the whole morning huddled down in the chair, opportunity lost!

I still invite her most every time.

I used to remind my girlfriend (wife now) over and over... is your drag loose enough, is your drag tight, did you check your drag... finally I had enough and keep my mouth shut and she lost a really nice walleye because....her drag was to tight. funny thing how she always checks it now. :D

Great thought GF. I'm the same with my friend, I like to have him go although he's not as dedicated & won't stay out forever like I will. I'll stay out all day catching fish or not. But thanks for putting it that way. It does make me think about it a better way. I'll teach him this year, I'll just tell him like it is. He knows I'm the one that catches all the fish :D
Plus I throw spinners all the time, even while bobber fishing. I'll usually find 'em with the spinners & then put out the live bait while continuing to fish spinners. I'll just keep him on the spinner patrol :D

It is well known that adults learn new stuff slower than children, OT.

We start children with a cane pole. Not a bad way for adults to start.

Re: Teaching a friend to fish.

I have a friend that does something that drives me out of my mind. I know you all have seen people hold a spinning rig upside down and reel backwards. Ive tried to be nice and show him why he is wrong, but he is doing it again by the end of the day. I mean its all out of balance and all. He also insists on holding the line in one hand when he casts with the other and his reel has the fast cast feature on it. Oh well. he has a good time so I leave him alone now.

My wife is my fishing buddy also, She really doesnt like getting up early, but I showed her how cool it was to see things come to life as the sun comes up once, so now she will go out with me early sometimes. Still, she would rather fish in the evenings.
