I did a search and I'm still confused. I bought a 2000, 200hp Johnson ocean pro the dealer says run XD 30 at twice the price of other TCW 3 oils. I don't mind paying a little more for OMC but twice is rediculous. Some people say Wal Mart TCW 3 is just as good, West Marine says their's is fine for my engine. I;m going to leave this boat in loreto mexico and want to take a lot of good oil down.
thanks for your opinions

Milo

I assume it is carbureted, Milo.

Any TC-W3 rated oil will do just fine. I used WalMart SuperTech in all my 2 strokes.

Now, stand by for all the guys who don't agree. :(

Good evening Mvotb and Jb,,,,.JB,I know your right and Im not disagreeing with you, I have used other brands, but I dont use anything but Johnson any more. Before you get mad at me,let me say this :I asked the local Johnson dealer if I could use Quicksilver in my Johnson. He blowedup. He said J-E put extra-additives in J-E oils that Mercurys didnt require.

And....I've ran quicksilver in Johnrudes for years as well..Zero problems. I've also ran XD-30,50, and 100 in my merc and my Rude...No troubles.
Naturally the JohnRude dealer is going to tell you not to run Merc oil...he doesn't sell that.
I think any TC-W3 oil in a standard carbed engine that has not been "worked" for high performance, will work fine.
If you do PM as you are supposed to, troubles shouldn't haunt you.

TCW-3 is a bench mark that anyone's oil has to meet to be sold marked as such.I always suggest BRP or Merc,as it holds well when I talk to a factory rep about a 'shadowy'WRO problem.Sometimes using the manufacturers products, and using your dealer does help.

I think the XD_ _ oils are designed to lower carbon build up.Merc has similar oil products.

Face it,gas at the pumps is for your well smog controled auto, not for your oil burning marine engine.

Oil that costs twice as much is only a problem if you use a LOT of it.

So it's a personal decision.Powerheads fail for several reasons, but ALL are expensive.

DHP
