Could someone please point out the wisdom (or lack there of!) of removing the TBI system on my 1999 Crownline w/ a Volvo-Penta 5.0 and replacing it with an Edelbrock carbuerator. How much will the fuel usage change? Are there any other modifacations needed to complete the change-over? Thank-you! KenPickle The reason i'm asking is because the injector driver is not working (no pulse to injectors) but the coil driver and advance are working fine. the cost for a new ecm is at least $1200.00 as it has a "MEFI 3" which,I understand,is no longer made.I would need to install a "MEFI 4" which needs a different wiring harness (At additional cost!) Also, the boat will be heading to Mexico (Permanently) and I want things as simple as possible! KenPickle.

Fuel usuage will probably go up. You will need to change the fuel system, the TBI pumps are a much higher pressure than the carb uses. If you have the fuel pump that is a low pressure pump on the front of the engine and a high pressure one on the back you might be able to use the low pressure pump. You will probably also have to rewire the distributor, I think it's connected through the EFI module, not sure how involved that will be. Why do this? Issues? I know a carb is probably easier to troubleshoot and the EFI system takes some different tools, and a scanner sure helps, is it giving you that much trouble? I think most of the problems VP owners seem to be experiencing have to do with the fuel pumps.

The only reason to stick with carbs and points ignition, is to make problem solving (when things go wrong) easier for non mechanics.
