I use a 7 foot medium stiff rod for tarpon. I am thinking of loader her up with 40 pound test Power Pro up front and 40 pound test mono as backing. I figure I can heave the PP much farther than the mono. Is this a good idea, or should I go with all PP or mono.
Stalker

I typically like a long rod for fishing tarpon, an 8' heavy fast action rod should do the trick of making long casts so you don't get too close to a school and spoke them. As far as the line you are right on with the 40 lb power pro, and for the backing you dont necessarily need 40 lb test. I usually like to use 12-20 lb mono just so the power pro doesnt slip. Just make sure you get plenty of pp on your spool, say 200-300 yards depending on your reel size. Good Luck!

www.tarpontidecharters.com

we use 60# power pro, with a 6 foot leader of 80-100# flourcarbon with a 6/0 circle hook for live bait
