Can anyone tell me the purpose of a taper pin? I have a 1990 40hp Johnson that has just one which goes in hole between crankcase and cyl block. Is this a critical item? I am rebuilding this engine and may have to do so without the pin because of a major screw-up on my part during disassembly.

Re: Taper Pin

Dave.... The taper pin is actually a centering pin that aligns the two crankcase halves. Without it, the crankcase halves will stand a very good chance of not being aligned properly.

Re: Taper Pin

Thanks for the reply Joe. I can put the taper pin back in during reassembly , however I'm not sure it will stay in during operation, But, the bolt holes will only align with each other, how could the taper pin have more bearing than bolts installed?
